Name?
Jarett Shinoda
What is your nickname? If you have one?
Noda, Shinoders, Noders
Where do you primarily ride?
I am based out of Central California. My home mountain is China Peak Mountain Resort, where I ride locally & then travel out to Mammoth & Tahoe regularly.
What made you start snowboarding?
The reason I got into snowboarding was because it was a reason to getaway from the city for myself & my friends. Growing up in Fresno, CA there aren’t always the most positive influences in a city, but the one huge perk is that we are relatively close to Yosemite and the Sierra National Forrest so my parents always made sure we took advantage of life’s natural beauties and opportunities. Which I am forever grateful for.
What’s your favorite board to ride?
My go to board is a Rome Artifact. I am a huge fan of fun playful board that you can have fun anywhere on hill and beat around in the park while still allowing me to play with my edges when need be.
Why do you love to snowboard?
The reason I love snowboarding is because there’s no free feeling like it. The energy it creates is as though you are flying just living in the current moment. It’s a constant battle between yourself and the mountain. That allows expression through creativity.
When you aren’t snowboarding what are you most likely finding yourself getting into?
I recently converted a 1989 Toyota van and am currently working on a 1975 Chinook so traveling is something I always find myself doing. I am a huge kinesiology nerd, in particular physiology and biomechanics.
What is your favorite area on the mountain? Jumps, rails, natural terrain?
Honestly I just love free riding! The park is always a favorite and a great way to express oneself. Though my favorite part of the mountain would definitely have to be a sunny groomed run and playing with your edges. There’s nothing like surfing the earth, I just love how creative and stylish anyone can get with something as simple as carving.
Where do you see yourself in five years snowboarding wise? Traveling to another country?
In 5 years I truly hope to see myself passionate about the sport the way I am now. Chasing the storm as it presents its self, riding at any given opportunity and to have traveled to the places I’ve been telling myself that I will ride there someday, like Japan, Europe, New Zealand, etc.
Do you have a pre-boarding ritual or something you need to have on you at all times on the mountain?
I do a little dynamic stretching before gearing up & a safety meeting with yourself before you ride is always a must.
